David Hockney movie A Bigger Splash reissued by the BFI on DVD and Blu-ray
Yes, you've heard of the painting, but what about the movie? Ever seen that? Well very soon, you'll be able to watch the 'structured reality' film featuring artist David Hockney called A Bigger Splash in your own home.
The BFI's will release the movie on 30th January in a Dual Format Edition (DVD and Blu-ray together). What's it about? Well, in the early 1970s, director Jack Hazan gained intimate access to David Hockney and his circle of friends and lovers. Using that 'structured reality' format rather than pure documentary, he created his film, groundbreaking in style and more than a little daring.
It covers the period when Hockney's long-term relationship with fellow painter Peter Schlesinger had dissolved and a period when he was under pressure to produce new work. But above all, it showcases the '70s art scene and Hockney's circle of friends, including his muse, the fashion and textile designer Celia Birtwell, her husband, fashion designer Ossie Clark, art dealer John Kasmin, curator and art critic Henry Geldzahler and Hockney’s loyal assistant Mo McDermott.
It is released on Blu-ray for the first time, along with two rare shorts from the BFI National Archive - Love’s Presentation (1966) which captures the creation of Hockney’s Cavafy Etchings and Portrait of David Hockney (1972), which shows Hockney both at work and relaxing at home.
You can pre-order now from Amazon or you can check out the trailer for the movie below.
