'True Yank' by Leon Reid IV

Lincoln

As part of the State of the Art: New York exhibition currently on at Urbis, artist Leon Reid IV has created a 'site-specific intervention' using the statue of Abraham Lincoln that stands in Lincoln Square on Brazenose Street in Manchester by giving it a modern day revamp.

The statue of America’s 16th President commemorates the thanks offered by Lincoln to the people of Manchester for their support when he blockaded the export of raw cotton to Manchester in a campaign to put an end to slavery. For the duration of the intervention the statue is sporting a baseball cap, medallions and rings. With the additions Reid’s pays tribute to this story and highlights the affection in which Lincoln is still held by African Americans today.

If you are out around Manchester why not take a look? If you can't make it and want to see more you can find a range of images of the statue on the Urbis flickr section.
